iPhone 5 announced

It goes without saying that the biggest announcement for the world of smartphones on September 12th, 2012, would be that of Apple’s iPhone 5 making an appearance to the rest of the world. Did it live up to expectations? I suppose that the answer would be “yes” if we were to take all of the rumors into consideration, and “no” if you were to look at the iPhone 5 and compare it to the rest of the market. For starters, it comes with a larger 4″ display, with the main attraction being a slimmer profile that measures 7.6mm, making it 18% thinner than its predecessor while tipping the scales at 112 grams.

The 4” display resolution of 1136×640 makes it fall under the “Retina” category by Apple’s standards at 326 PPI, and touch sensors have been integrated into the display itself which cements earlier speculation that Apple would use in-cell display technology this time around. Connectivity options include HSPA+, DC-HSDPA and 4G LTE, while the new A6 processor is touted to be twice as fast in terms of both CPU and graphics compared to the A5. Battery life for the iPhone 5 has been rated at 8 hours for LTE browsing, 10 hours for video playback and 225 hours of standby time.

It will carry an 8-megapixel camera sensor with BSI, a hybrid IR filter, and an aperture of f/2.4 that ought to help you capture some decent images even in low-light conditions. The rumored new dock connector was also proven to be true, dubbed “Lightning” alongside an adapter for retro-compatibility. iOS 6 will power the iPhone 5, and you can pick up the iPhone 5 in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB flavors for $199, $299 and $399, respectively.
