One of the things that many people had expected Apple to change about its iPhone would be its design, screen size, possible capacitive home button, etc, but no one really thought about Apple possibly changing the dock connector. After all with the dock connector being a prominent part of many iOS device accessories ranging from cheap to ridiculously expensive, we don’t blame you if you had thought that Apple would have left the dock connector alone. Apparently not. A while back there have been alleged component leaks of the iPhone 5 that showed off a slimmer profile, a larger display, and most interesting of all, a much smaller dock connector. Of course these photos can hardly be called the real thing. Apple has been known for their secrecy and rumor mongers have been known to get it wrong in the past, but it seems that as far as the iPhone 5 is concerned, the smaller dock connector is a sure thing.
This was “confirmed” by the folks at Tech Crunch who claims to have “independently verified” and “confirmed” the rumor. So why would Apple change the dock connector, knowing that many accessory makers are pretty much reliant on the current 30-pin dock connector? Apparently in a quest to save space (to make the phone thinner, fit a larger battery, lighter, etc), a small dock connector was conceived. If you think that this is a load of hooey, it’s not so far fetched. Apple has reportedly put out a job listing in the past that was looking for people who could help redesign the dock. Will this redesigned dock connector make its way into the next-gen iPhone? We guess we will have to wait and see, until then we suggest taking this with a grain of salt for now.
