There were rumors floating about the internet regarding Intel’s 10-inch Medfield powered ‘Classmate PC’ tablets. However, it seems that that Intel has gone with a 7-inch model that is powered by an Intel Atom Oak Trail processor called the Studybook instead. The tablet has been labeled as a ruggedized version that claims to be resistant to both, water and dust and at 525g, it is quite bulky.

The device is said to be built from a single piece of plastic and houses shock absorbers around its screen to protect it against accidental drops. Specifications of note on the device are that in includes WiFi connectivity, a full sized USB port, HDMI and an estimated battery life of 5.5 hours. The Studybook which is clearly aimed at the educational market has included software which allows teachers to create and manage content for the devices.

On top of that, both the front and the rear cameras can be configured to collect time-lapse data presumably for science projects. The Studybook will also come preloaded with an e-book reader. For the moment the tablet which will be affordably priced at under $200, will have Windows 7 installed but Intel expects it to have Android Honeycomb installed later in the year.
