Survey shows how we prefer to communicate. Phone calls come third

Recently our friends over at Conversations conducted a poll to find out how people communicate in the Golden Age of communications and technology. The mobile phone has come a long way since its inception a few decades ago. From being a method of placing a phone call without dropping coins in or sitting next to a phone port twirling the curly cable around your index finger to where it is now, a hub for a variety of communication means all sitting in your jeans pocket.

Out of 14 possible answers, SMS got the nod at first place by being a virtually discrete and fast method of sending a message and without missing any details. These factors are shared by method number 2 which is email which trails SMS’ 21.23% with an 18.72%. What both of these mediums of communication lack is the ability to convey a tone as effectively as you might sometimes want. That however can be achieved with the number 3 result, voice calls via a mobile phone which is what is was made to do anyway.

At number 4 is Facebook with 10% of the votes. From that result we can see that while people use Facebook as a social networking site, it is not really a means of communication for most people. At 5^th place however is what we expected to be higher up in the list, talking face-to-face. It is refreshing that people still see the need to physically be with someone to convey a message. Otherwise you can extrapolate from the data and assume that in 50 years, everyone will be sitting in their own cubicles talking only to servers and applications with no real human contact.
