Microsoft plans for Windows Phone to overtake iOS and Android in China

While iOS and Android are both dominating the smartphone marketshare, there is without doubt that Microsoft hopes that its Windows Phone platform will eventually play catchup with the big boys, but when, and how? Well it seems that Microsoft’s chairman and chief executive officer for the Greater China region, Simon Leung, has expressed the company’s interim goals to pass Apple’s iPhone market share in China, and to supplant Google’s Android OS as its long-term goal.

At the moment, the majority of Windows Phone devices tend to be budget devices with low-mid ranged specs and with affordable price tags to match, and it is exactly this aspect of Windows Phone devices that Simon Leung hopes will attract buyers over to its platform especially in China where it seems that pricing plays a huge deal. He even compared low-cost Windows Phone devices that start 1,000 yuan (~$158) against Apple’s iPhone which is going for 4,988 yuan.

So what do you guys think? Do you think Microsoft really has a shot here at overtaking both iOS and Android, who when combined amount to more than 50% of the smartphone platform marketshare?
