Sony could be thinking of replacing Android with Vita OS

Sony’s PlayStation Vita is running none other than Sony’s very own Vita OS, but could it be used for more than just gaming? Well Sony’s upcoming president and CEO, Kazuo Kirai seems to think so. During a Q&A session with reporters, Hirai mentioned that the Vita OS should not be looked at as a mere gaming platform, but one that has many possibilities and could eventually make its way onto our smartphones and tablets.

“If you’re asking if we’ve made it in a way that’s expandable, so that it’s possible to apply to smartphones and tablets on top of achieving the high responsiveness we need for gaming devices — it is possible. That doesn’t mean that we’re applying it to smartphones and tablets at this point in time, but it’s been designed with expandability in mind.”

Sony recently bought out Ericsson in their joint venture and will soon be releasing Sony Android smartphones under the Sony moniker (no longer Sony Ericsson). While we don’t think Vita OS will be challenging iOS or Android any time soon, perhaps we may have gotten a glimpse into the future of Sony’s plans for their future smartphones. Anyone else excited at the possibility of Vita OS on their smartphone/tablet?
