Windows Phone 8 Apollo will not support current-generation Windows Phone handsets [Rumor]

Android has typically been seen as a fragmented operating system due to the number of devices available but yet all of them running on different builds of Android, some with the latest update, but some with older versions. Microsoft has done a pretty good job so far in streamlining their devices and providing updates, but it looks like that might change with Windows Phone Apollo, also known as Windows Phone 8.

According to Eldar Murtazin, the Windows Phone 8 update will not be available to current Windows Phone devices. The Apollo update is expected to be a major one and supposedly will be unveiled come September later this year. The update is also supposed to allow handset manufacturers to begin producing “super phones” for the Windows Phone platform that will hopefully elevate the hardware and software to compete against iOS and Android.

If that is indeed the case, given that all Windows Phone devices at the moment currently employ single-core processors, as opposed to the dual and upcoming quad-core processors of Android smartphones, we guess the Apollo update will not be compatible with the current generation of Windows Phone handsets. Of course it should be noted that this is simply a rumor for now so we suggest you take this news with a grain of salt, at least until more information has been revealed.
