Singaporean carrier offering “non camera” iPhone 4S

While camera phones have been praised by consumers, there are some government divisions that probably aren’t too pleased with the invention of the camera phone, and Singapore’s military would be one such example. In the past, military personnel with camera phones had to get their devices modified in order to disable the camera so it cannot be used on site.

This included practices such as pasting a black/silver plastic screen over the camera lens to ensure that photos cannot be taken. Military personnel will also need to submit a certificate from a local carrier to prove that it has been modified. Well the good/bad news is that if you are in the Singapore military and you want to get your hands on the iPhone 4S, Singaporean carrier, M1, is now offering a “non camera” version of the device.

This is apparently not an official modification sanctioned by Apple, which means that the device will basically have its warranty voided (hopefully it will be covered by the carrier at the very least) and will see its price raised to premium levels. What do you guys think? Given how one of the key features about the iPhone 4S is its camera and 1080p Full HD video recording, it does feel like it is being crippled, but then again that’s the price military personnel will have to pay to enjoy the iPhone 4S while on base.
