Remember the Aakash tablet? For those who don’t remember, the Aakash tablet is a tablet launched in India with the aim of being extremely affordable. Right now the first generation tablets are being tried out by about 8,000 students, and we guess it was kind of successful which is why the Indian government plans on rolling out 200 million new units of the second-generation Aakash tablets over the next couple of years.

According to Digitimes, the Indian government is reportedly soliciting Taiwan-based PC makers to participate in the bidding process. According to Sandeep Yadav, the convener of the project, by using Taiwan PC makers, the cost of the next-generation Aakash tablet could very well be sold for $35 each! It seems that it’s this bidding process that has seen the delay of tablet being pushed back from December of 2011 to January of 2012. Of course its specs are nowhere near spectacular but it should be decent enough to get the job done, and with its low price point, it will be much more affordable to the masses in developing countries.
