Intel shows off Medfield smartphone reference design

When it comes to processors on our smartphones, companies such as Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, NVIDIA come to mind. While Intel has been putting out processors for enterprise tablets running on Windows, they have yet to come out with a processor intended for smartphone use, at least not yet. For those following the tech news are aware that Intel does have plans for a mobile chipset of their own called Medfield and the rendering above is what Intel thinks Medfield phones ought to look like.

According to Intel, Medfield has been designed in such a way that when powering Android devices will result in speedier Android apps and web browsing, along with the ability to capture 10 full-sized 8MP images at a rate of 15 shots per second. Pretty impressive claims. Will Medfield allow Intel to compete against ARM based processors? Well, with the company reportedly planning an announcement of Medfield based products for the first half of 2012, we are undoubtedly excited to see what they have in store for us.
