Free and “legal” Siri port now available for jailbroken iOS 5 devices

If you’ve got an older iPhone with you and you’d love to port Siri over onto that device, the good news is that developers Steve Troughton-Smith, Chpwn and Ryan Petrich decided to release a Siri port dubbed Spire, and what makes this port different from the other ports that are floating around out there is that apparently it’s legal. This was achieved by allegedly using a new method to obtain the necessary files which does not violate any copyrights.

Of course this isn’t the most elegant of ports and it would require the user to gain authorization through their own server and would still need the use of an iPhone 4S.

“However, Spire is not a complete solution. Apple still requires authorization to use Siri, so information from an iPhone 4S is still required. To insert this information, Spire allows you to enter your own proxy server address. By using this (ancient) SiriProxy fork, you can setup a proxy using your own iPhone 4S to insert the needed information reasonably easily. Other solutions for proxying Siri will be listed here as they are developed — perhaps that sort of proxy might be included in the main SiriProxy repository.”

Despite its release to the public, this may end up confusing for the layman user. Not to worry as mentioned above, Chpwn has stated that other solutions for proxying will be listed as time progresses, so if you’d like to pick up Spire, head on down here for the download link. Do note that this is done at your own risk, so if you’re not sure what you’re doing, you might want to hold off on this at least for now.
