Windows 8 Metro apps restricted to Windows Store only

The other day it was reported that Microsoft’s app store for Windows 8 would be taking a 30% cut from Metro apps, much like how Apple is charging developers on the iTunes App Store. It was also mentioned that if developers decided not to host it on the Windows Store that they could get it hosted on third party sites, but as it turns out that may not be the case.

At a BUILD Conference last week, Microsoft director Ted Dworkin said that Metro-style apps will indeed be restricted to the Windows Store for sales and distribution. What this means is that if you wanted to get your hands on a Windows 8 Metro app in the future, your best bet would be the official Windows Store, which is a good/bad thing depending on how you look at it. We’re guessing that certain restrictions will impede some apps from getting approval, but on the upside it should mean that there’s a less likely chance of your Windows 8 device getting infected by malware.
