Samsung and Intel collaborate for “Tizen” mobile platform

While MeeGo isn’t technically dead yet, Intel probably was discouraged when Nokia decided to move away from their platform to Microsoft’s Windows Phone, and there were rumors that Intel was considering dropping the platform altogether. Now it looks like it may be revived in another form as Intel and Samsung have come together and announced yet another Linux-based platform, which they have codenamed Tizen.

Tizen is looking to target a variety of devices, such as smartphones, tablets, netbooks, smart TVs and even in-vehicle entertainment systems. Sounds like what HP had planned for webOS, but we will see how Tizen will take off. It is also expected to use HTML5 as a mobile app platform, and with Samsung being a major player in the smartphone manufacturing business, along with tablets and other appliances, perhaps this new venture with Intel will take off better than MeeGo did.
