While we have to applaud Google for their openness with Android, it’s exactly that openness which has caused the platform to become fragmented, with some users getting updates before other users and overall causing varying levels of user experiences. For example there could be users running on Froyo 2.2 who might have benefited immensely from a Gingerbread 2.3 update. This is exactly what Nokia is hoping to take advantage of when they release their Windows Phone 7 devices.
While we can’t be sure that Windows Phone 7 will suffer the same fragmentation due to the variety of manufacturers who will be producing WP7 devices, it seems that Nokia is confident that they will be able to beat out Android eventually, or at least until Google takes care of the fragmentation issue.
