One of the downsides to owning an iOS device is that Google based apps, such as Google Maps, will usually get an update on Android first, assuming those updates come to iOS at all. While it seems that iOS users are stuck with the native Google Maps app that comes with all iOS devices, Android users have been enjoying updated versions of the map app, and it appears that version 5.9 has just hit the market with several new features.

The update brings some new features with it, such as the return of “Bubble buttons” which allows the user to navigate directly via the popup, making it extremely convenient. Voice and ring tone notifications for Transit Navigation have also found its way into Google Maps along with tablet support for Transit Navigation. Both features appear to be in beta, although so far there hasn’t really been any complaints regarding them.

The update is available from Android Market, so just head on down there to update your Google Maps today.
