Number of Android Gingerbread users increasing

Android fragmentation has been a recurring issue with Android devices, with some devices getting updates quickly, while some have to wait for months. In fact, according to the pie chart above, it looks like there’s still a sizeable chunk of Android users still running on Android Éclair 2.1. The majority looks like they’re still running on Froyo 2.2, although it is said that the numbers are declining thanks to an increase in devices that have been upgraded to Gingerbread 2.3.

During Google I/O, Google mentioned that they’re working together with handset manufacturers to decrease Android fragmentation, and hopefully that will change when they release Ice Cream Sandwich, which should be out some time towards the end of the year. Until then, let’s hope that manufacturers and carriers continue pushing out Gingerbread updates to the rest of Android users ASAP!
