HTC acquires S3 Graphics for $300 million

It has been reported that HTC has bought out graphics chip maker, S3 Graphics, along with S3’s patent portfolio from Via, who is another chipset maker. This is a pretty smart move on HTC’s end as the $300 million purchase has given them 235 new intellectual properties in the process.

HTC has also given Via a perpetual license to use the patents, which means we won’t be seeing any nasty patent-infringement lawsuits between HTC and Via anytime soon. It’ll be interesting to see how HTC plans to use the new IPs and technology that they have acquired in their upcoming smartphones.
