Walmart Brings iPhone 4 Prices Down

It seems that Walmart has brought down the prices of the current iPhone 4 for both Verizon and AT&T customers, bringing the price tag down to $147 from a price tag of $197. Of course this will require customers to be tied to a 2-year contract which is more or less standard, but what are the implications of this price drop?

This move was brought about shortly before WWDC started and even though Apple had promised that there would be no new hardware revealed at this year’s WWDC, does Walmart know something that we don’t? As it stands the iPhone 4 remains Apple’s most popular device to date and the best seller of all the iPhones, which means that demand is still there so why would Walmart bring the price down unless they know that the iPhone 4 will be phased out soon and they are attempting to clear their stock and make room for the next generation iPhone?

An e-mail from Walmart’s PR team taken from MobileCrunch reveals:

Hi Matt,

Walmart today announced a price reduction on the iPhone 4 which will be available for $147 today, June 6 through June 30 at select stores.

These savings apply to both the AT&T and Verizon versions of the iPhone 4 in both black and white colors. Pricing requires a new two-year wireless and data agreement or qualified upgrade.

Maybe we are reading too much into it and it could just be a sale for all we know, either way Apple’s WWDC is still on-going which means there’s still a tiny, tiny chance that we could be surprised.
