Nokia Passes Symbian Torch To Accenture

Published

Remember Nokia promised that they would continue developing and updating for Symbian until 2016? No, Nokia has not gone back on their word but it looks like they won’t be doing it themselves, but rather the Symbian torch has been handed to global consulting firm Accenture where Nokia will be transferring approximately 2,800 employees in the U.S., Finland, the U.K., and other countries to the outsourcing firm when the deal closes in October.

Nokia on the other hand will instead be focusing their efforts on their upcoming Windows Phone 7 devices. Not sure how Nokia loyalists and fans will feel about getting handed off to another company for their Symbian needs, but Accenture is a global company with an excellent track record and Nokia will definitely be there to make sure that the quality and professionalism is being kept.

It’s quite a smart move on Nokia’s part as they are steadily losing market share to iOS and Android and their last ditch effort is with Windows Phone 7. Not too long ago Stephen Elop announced that Windows Phone 7 was their plan A and that there was no plan B, which makes sense for them to focus their efforts on getting it right the first time.
