iOS 5 Warns Of Unsecured Calls

Published

on

One of the new features of iOS 5 that wasn’t mentioned during the WWDC keynote speech was the feature whereby iOS 5 was able to detect whether your call can be tapped in, very much like the movies where the caller asks if they’re on a secure line. However this isn’t exactly a new feature among phones these days, in fact it’s hard to find brand new features in iOS 5 to begin with, but that’s another story all together.

According to Wikipedia:

there are a few mobile phones that show a small symbol on the display, e.g. an exclamation point, if encryption is not used. Another point is the calling number. Since the network access is handled with the SIM/USIM of the IMSI-catcher, the receiver cannot see the number of the calling party. Of course, this also implicates that the tapped calls are not listed in the itemized bill.

However I think for the most part how many of us out there are actually concerned about not being on a secured line anyway? I think nowadays we spend more time texting rather than calling, and even then unless we were discussing trade secrets or sensitive information there’s really nothing to be gained from listening in. Do you guys agree?
