Remember a while back, patent troll Lodsys went about threatening Apple and Android developers with lawsuits claiming they weren’t properly licensed to use its in app purchase technology? As it stands Google still has not responded to Lodsys while Apple has stood by its developers by sending out a legal letter to Lodsys pretty much telling them to drop it as they had no basis for a lawsuit. A bold move but there was no indication that that might have stopped Lodsys which is why it seems that Apple is indeed following up with the issue by asking its developers when they logged into iTunes Connect they were prompted, asking if they were facing legal issues hence the update to their app.
I guess Apple is still trying to see how far the extent of Lodsys’s lawsuits have reached their developers but at the moment it doesn’t look like Lodsys have made their move yet, so perhaps Apple’s stern sounding letter did the trick, or perhaps Lodsys is taking its time to prepare a lawsuit and their defences, either that or the whole thing will eventually just die off by itself.
