Not too long ago we reported that British Airlines was toying around with the idea to offer its business and first class passengers the iPad 2 to be used as entertainment units, replacing the current DVD players, and now it looks like American Airlines is set to follow in their footsteps except in this case it looks like American Airlines will be leaning towards Android as their preferred platform with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

It seems like American Airlines has already deployed 6,000 units of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it will be offered to their first and business class passengers flying international or transcontinental flights some time later this year. Passengers will be able to use the device to purchase wireless services on American Airline’s planes equipped with WiFi to check their email and to browse the internet among other features.

Right now both companies are working on which specific features it will offer without the need for WiFi, such as movies, TV shows and games and Samsung also plans to customize the tablets for in-flight entertainment needs, including expanding the memory allotment, although a specific amount has not been determined. No word on when exactly this feature will be rolled out but all we know is some time later this year, so if any of our readers get the chance to enjoy these features do let us know about your experience!
