Samsung’s Foldable Display

A foldable display sounds like it could be quite interesting. It will be just like how it was in the past, rolling up newspapers, magazines or comics and putting them into our pockets. This foldable display by Samsung was actually previewed in 2008  but one of the major setbacks was that it required a hinge in the middle for the folding which thus created a crease in the display, which of course nobody likes, but it was still a pretty good idea at that time.

Come 2011 it seems that the Korean manufacturer has come up with an answer to that problem by using a combination of silicone rubber, two protective glass panels and a pair of AMOLED displays. The displays are then mounted next to each other on a flat piece of silicone rubber and two glass panels are placed on top of the AMOLED panels which act to both protect the displays and let you use them as touchscreens. It is then mounted in a case and folded in half.

Thanks to the silicone rubber which allows for a 180 degree fold with only a hinge less than 1mm. During research it seems that the display was able to be folded over 100,000 times with minimal effect on the quality of the display. It looks as though in the future we will be able to pull tablets out of our pocket like pieces of paper.
