Google To Acquire Modu Patents

Published

on

It looks like Google has plans for Modu when a deal to buy over its patents has gone through for $4.9 million. If you are unfamiliar with the company you can hardly be blamed as they are a now defunct Israeli cell phone maker that makes modular cell phones that could be placed into a variety of different sleeves, as pictured above, to perform different functions.

It certainly is a unique concept although it was not picked up by many carriers due to its lack of appeal. Perhaps Google has some plans for future Android devices with the modular cell phone concept. Personally speaking what I can see Google achieving with this is perhaps pre-loading the device with the latest Android operating systems while other phone manufacturers provide the sleeve, possibly eliminating the problem of Android fragmentation. Alternatively it could be used for apps and games, much like how your old Nintendo Gameboys would require a cartridge to be inserted before you could play the games.

Imagine a modular cell device that contained apps specifically designed for businesses, and another for games and entertainment, the possibilities are endless, although right now it seems that the device is rather bulky, but who knows?
