Become a DJ With Your iPhone

If you’ve ever entertained thoughts of being a DJ it seems that your prayers have been answered with the MOPHO DJ app for smartphones. Basically what it does is that it allows any smartphone with some sort of gyroscope or accelerometer to detect the movements made on a turntable wirelessly which in turn will be sent to a software on your laptop. You don’t really need actual vinyl (although I’m pretty sure traditionalists will strongly disagree with that statement) for this to work as creator Nicholas J. Bryan used a record sized piece of plexiglass in place of a vinyl record.

The app will also display the waveform of the song that you’re playing which will provide a more visual cue as to where the stronger points of the song are, allowing for better timing for scratches. Bryan says allowing DJs to use their old equipment with little modification is one of the major advantages of using the MOPHO DJ.

Alternatively if you just want the app for a cool party trick the app also features “untethered performance” which will allow the user to “air scratch” with the phone in hand, much similar to the concept of the air guitar.
