Apple Takes Home SID Awards for iPhone 4 & iPad

A big congratulations to Apple for taking home two awards as part of SID’s Display of the Year award.

The first award that Apple will be taking home would be the event’s titular Gold prize is the Retina Display on the iPhone 4, which has four times the pixel density of earlier iPhones and provides better viewing angles than most LCDs by way of IPS technology. According to Electronista, “The display in fact has several technical advancements, the Society elaborates.

These include a customized LTPS TFT backplane with organic passivation and optimized pixel design, as well as auto-adjusting brightness based on an ambient light sensor. Special IPS compensation polarizer technology contributes to 800:1 contrast and consistent color, the latter of which is also 8-bit. The display uses a thin driver IC with a small footprint, and what SID describes as ‘patent-pending mechanical integration.'”

The iPad has also grabbed the award too but while not as sharp as the iPhone 4’s retina display, the award was given due to the fact that it was present on such a thin tablet while still offering accurate colors at multiple viewing angles while maintaining 10 hours of battery life while on WiFi access.

This is great news for Apple and with all the great new display technology that was seen at SID this year by Toshiba, Samsung and LG, we can only imagine what the future iPhone and iPad will have in store for us displaywise next year.
