Apple Looking To Overtake LG As Handset Maker

According to Garter’s first quarter of 2011 mobile phone market survey, it shows that Nokia is still leading the charge with about 107.5 million phones shipped in the first quarter. This is of course obvious as Nokia caters to all sorts of mobile device users, ranging from dumb phones to business phones like the Nokia Communicator and E-series. Coming in second is LG with almost 24 million phones shipped which seems to be very far behind Nokia.

Coming in at third place is Apple with about 16.9 million phones shipped out in the first quarter of 2011, doubling their sales from a year ago while other phone manufacturers like LG, Sony Ericsson and Motorola have stumbled, allowing Apple to almost catch up with LG.

Granted Android is the leading platform for smartphone devices but it seems in terms of phone units sold, Apple has been doing rather well for themselves as they are producing both the phones and the platform. Of course if we were talking about collective sales for Android’s platform devices they have definitely beaten Apple. Is it possible that Nokia will continue to retain their top spot for phones sold or will Apple eventually play catch up? Or can Nokia’s upcoming Windows Phone 7 devices help to surge forward in the mobile phones race?
