Sprint on road to embrace LTE under the code name ‘Project Leapfrog’

Sprint tried its hands at the WiMAX technology a number of years ago to get the first mover advantage, but then no one really headed in that direction after them. Sprint was fooled by the fact that Intel was backing that technology. Anyway past is history and now it ‘appears’ that Sprint is looking to make amends by switching over to LTE. Sprint says it will decide on using LTE by the middle of this year but analysts at Gerson Lehrman Group believe Sprint has made the decision and the transition is already on course under the codename ‘Project Leapfrog’. At present Sprint uses the CDMA technology, but the transition is indicative of the pressure other carriers have created by switching to LTE. LTE is a standard developed by the same bunch of people who introduced EDGE (2G), UMTS (3G), and HSPA (3.5G) and therefore the pro-CDMA carrier should not be ideally hesitant to make the switch. The source behind the rumors of ‘Project Leapfrog’ reveals that Sprint will completely switch to LTE over the next three years.
