Unlocked Windows Phone 7 devices locked again

Apparently at around 7am yesterday, users of Windows Phone 7 devices that have been unlocked by the ChevronWP7 tool mysteriously began locking themselves again. Unsigned apps which were running while this lock happened would present an error message to the user asking them to uninstall the app. Right away, everybody had their fingers pointed at Microsoft for the cause of this relock. Then in a blog post on the ChevronWP7 blog, one of the creators of the unlocking software explained the situation. It is the result of a periodic check done by the phone. About every two weeks, the device will contact Microsoft to check if it should be unlocked. If Microsoft responds with a no, the device will then revert back to its locked state. Whether or not this explanation is true has yet to be verified, but it looks like the future of WP7 is starting to look pretty closed.
