Texas Instruments, the company behind the OMAP processors used in the Motorola Droid phones has just announced a new member of the OMAP 4 family. Called the TI OMAP 4440, it will be the successor to the TI OMAP 4430, improving the processor in every way. The best part is that it’s built on the same architecture, which means it will be easy to migrate hardware and software to the new processor. The TI OMAP 4440 boasts: 1.25x increase in graphics performance, 30% decrease in webpage load time, 2x increase in 1080p video playback performance, clock speeds as fast as 1.5GHz per ARM Crotex-A9 MP Core- yes you got that right, this processor will have two ARM Cortex-A9 MP Cores. Say hello to dual-core OMAP processors. The TI OMAP 4440 will be made available to manufacturers at the beginning of next year and we should expect to see them in phones and tablets by the second half of 2011. I wonder how these new chips will stand up against NVIDIA’s dual-core Tegra 2 processors. And let’s see which manufacturers will be picking them up for their phones next year.
