Nokia gives Indian government access to users’ emails and messages

It appears that Nokia has just given up on the same battle that RIM has been struggling for a long time to overcome. Nokia has just announced that they have completed the installation of some servers that will allow the Indian government to lawfully look through Nokia users’ emails and messages. In efforts to prevent terrorism, the Indian government believes that by having access to their citizen’s communication devices, they can monitor every single thing that goes on between them. Earlier this year, they requested for RIM to give them full access to all the BlackBerry messages sent in India, but RIM has stuck to their ideals of privacy and hasn’t budged yet. If they don’t comply by January next year, their services will be shut down in India, and RIM would lose a whole chunk of customers- something they would rather not happen. Well, it looks like you’ve got to compromise once in awhile. Even though the government has access to all the Nokia phones in India, the Vice President for Nokia India assures their customers that their privacy would be protected. How would you feel if every single message you sent and received could be read by the authorities?
