Nexus S NFC Chip Can Only Read Data

This probably isn’t the happiest bit of news for Nexus S fans out there, but it has been confirmed that the NFC chip in the phone, supplied by NXP, only allows the phone to read data at the moment. What this means is that the phone won’t be able to transfer data out via NFC, so you won’t be able to use it for mobile payments and similar services. The good news is that NXP says that the limitation is only temporary and the chip will soon support the full range of features as seen in other NFC-enabled devices. While a specific date wasn’t mentioned, we’re assuming that the functionality will arrive in the form of an update somewhere down the line.
