iOS overtakes BlackBerry OS as the dominant smartphone OS in the US

Apple has finally overtaken RIM for the top spot in smartphone operating system shares. According to a recent report published by Nielsen, as of October 2010, Apple’s iOS holds 27.9% of the smartphone market, while RIM’s BlackBerry OS has 27.4%. Though it’s only a .5% lead, and it’s only in the US, for a company that only has one phone released at a time, and through only one carrier, it goes to show that smart branding and marketing can take you a long way. Google’s Android operating system sits close at 22.7%, and is predicted to grow even more in the coming months, taking the lead away from Apple. It looks like RIM needs to step up their game if they want to remain competitive.
