According to the Android Developer’s Blog, Gingerbread (Android 2.3) will be using a different file system (ext4) as opposed to what Android has been using all along (YAFFS). To skip the technical details, the latest version of Android will be much faster than the previous version partly due to the change in file system- how the phone reads, and organizes the files on your phone. According to the post, not every phone will be getting the upgrade to support this change though- only the newer phones with larger internal storage will be subject to such changes. With the Nexus S arriving in just a few days, we can finally get our hands on a Gingerbread device and experience this speed boost ourselves. It sure sounds like it’s going to be exciting.
