Dialog Semiconductor, the provider of displays, audio and power management semiconductor solutions has announced the DA8223 – the world’s first real time 2D to 3D video convertor chip for portable devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs. As well as converting content into 3D, a special parallax barrier screen driver lets users view 3D content without glasses. The chip analyzes 2D content, and renders each frame or image accordingly almost instantly. The process is done on the chip itself, so it doesn’t take any extra memory or processing power and it won’t affect the battery life of the phone either. What this basically means is that the chip, combined with the parallax barrier allows users to view regular 2D content on their phones as though they were 3D visuals, without the need of special software and glasses. With users wanting 3D on their phones but with hardly any content to watch, this chip solves those problems. The chip will support still images and videos of up to 60FPS, it can work in both landscape and portrait mode, and will support displays from 3.8″ to 10″. Device samples will be unveiled in early 2011, and will be in mass production in the second half of 2011. It’s time to move over Sharp. It looks like the 3D display competition on phones is heating up. Head here for more info. Who’s excited about watching 3D movies on their phone?
