Twitter, the world’s most famous micro-blogging service could have some horrifying ramifications for some people. Case in point, a woman from China has been sent to a labor camp for one year of “re-education”. The tweet she sent was actually a retweet of a message sent by her fiancé in the midst of anti-Japanese demonstrations in China last month. The tweet urged protestors to destroy the Japanese exhibition at the Shanghai Expo. As a joke, the woman retweeted the message with an additional “Charge, angry youth!” on Twitter. The authorities didn’t seem to think so. Twitter, like many other online services, is banned in China but is accessible with various online tools and through a virtual private network. With the authorities having such a grip on the internet, is the internet truly a place of freedom anymore?
