When the G2 was first launched, developers had no problem rooting it- but they found out the root was only temporary and would be removed whenever the phone was rebooted. Rooting a phone is the process that grants the highest-level of permission to the user of the phone. With Root access, a user has extreme control over the files on their device, they can modify files that are usually read-only, and they can install custom ROMs to change the way their phone looks and works. Obviously the Android community weren’t too pleased with the auto-restoration, but those folks took it as just another challenge. There wasn’t much development for it, until someone figured out a way to just auto-root it on every reboot, but now it seems that a permanent root has been found. Expect some custom ROMs to arrive for the phone very soon. And kudos to the team that worked on the hack- now, the G2 is truly free. Instructions for the root can be found on xda-developers, but as usual, make sure you know what are doing as you could render your phone useless. Do you think HTC/T-Mobile will attempt to patch the phone up again in their next update?
