With the advent of AirPlay in iOS 4.2, it also marked the beginning of over the air streaming but it also marked the end of in-car USB compatibility with a lot of stereos. It appears that after the iOS 4.2 update, a large number of people are having trouble connecting their iOS devices to their car’s USB port. System which had no problems playing music from the iOS device previously now had trouble recognizing it. Connecting an updated device to a car stereo gave messages like “Device not supported” or “Unreadable”. This has frustrated many users and there is no way to fix such a problem now. A fix needs to come from the stereo manufacturers or from Apple in order to make the devices compatible again. In the mean time, look for an alternative means to play music from your iPhone to your car- FM modulator or auxiliary cable instead of using the car’s USB port. Let us know if you’ve encountered this problem and have a solution around it.
