iPad to render Avatar-like movies “very soon” (Autodesk CEO). Really?
Autodesk president and CEO, Carl Bass, has insisted that in the future, consumers will be able to make Avatar-style movies on their iPads. In a recent article, he said, “Very soon, users will be able to sit with an iPad at home at make a movie like Avatar.” This sounds very inspiring and but frankly it is quite implausible, considering how James Cameron spent millions of dollars investing in next-generation technology in order to achieve the results in last year’s blockbuster. Though it truly is amazing how far we’ve come in portable technology since the first laptop, but to suggest that iPads could create Avatar-style movies is a bit far-fetched. Maybe in a decade or two when tablets become much more powerful, but for now it’s as much of a fantasy as Pandora is. What do you think?
Publishers’s note: Mr. Carl Bass should start by defining “very soon” because to most people it might sound like “next year” or ” in two years”. Obviously, computer graphics has gone a long way in the past 10 years, but that’s 10 years (!). At the moment, we’ll call that sensationalism. When Autodesk can show us (hopefully “very soon”) how Avatar-like movies can be made on an iPad-style device, we’ll surely post about that. [Obviously, it is still possible to render “in the cloud” (offsite), but even then, the iPad is not an optimal workstation]. In the meantime, Autodesk can probably grab headlines with more interesting statements based on reality.
