$62k For Wireless Roaming Mobile Data

We’ve all heard the stories of users being billed insane amounts of money for using data overseas. Most of us are already fairly educated on the matter that we wouldn’t attempt such a thing, but every now and then, an incident crops up where somebody tries to download a movie using a cell phone that’s roaming internationally. That was the case with a customer called Alberto who called CNN to complain after he was billed $62,000 for wireless data charges whilst roaming internationally. After much protest, the unnamed mobile carrier lowered the bill to $17,000, which it claims just covers the cost of the bandwidth, but somehow we have more than a little trouble believing such a claim (of the carrier’s).
