New Symbian Foundation Causes UIQ To Cut Jobs

While a lot of Symbian supporters will no doubt be rejoicing at the latest announcement of the creation of the Symbian Foundation, there probably will be a lot of people who will be disappointed at the announcement that follows it.

It seems that with the Symbian Foundation’s creation, there is the issue of positional redundancy, as S60 and UIQ have obviously become good friends. UIQ has been the first to start chopping heads, as they announced a total of 200 layoffs, which amounts to over half of their 375-strong staff. UIQ has never been as popular as Nokia’s S60, so they probably will be the ones hit hardest by this merger. Hopefully all this sad news will bring about a positive development in terms of Symbian as a whole.
