Next Gen iPhone To Offer Over The Air Music Downloads
Although current iPhone users are happy to use a WiFi connection to download their music via iTunes, Apple has new plans to bring OTA(Over the Air) music downloads for the next-generation iPhone. According to the New York Times, Apple is planning to use the faster UMTS-based HSDPA data connection for their 3G iPhone, and allow users to download music anytime and anywhere they wish.
As part of Apple’s plan to provide even more mobile music for the iPhone, Apple is planning to expand its ringtone business via its iTunes Store, and there are also rumors that Apple is working to bring the popular ringback tone feature to the iPhone. It looks like the Infineon 3G chip within the 3G iPhone is going to be downloading more than just web pages, though on the financial side of things, Apple still needs to work out a deal with the music labels, who want more than the current 70 cent wholesale price that they get with Apple’s current pricing structure.
Though we’re all waiting for an official iPhone announcement from Apple, this looks like just the thing to push the iPhone up to the next level.
