FCC Auctioning New Spectrum
The FCC chairman, Kevin Martin, has announced that the agency might be holding another auction for a new spectrum. This new auction, named AWSII is said to sell off the 25 MHz chunk of airwaves within the 2155-2180 MHz range.
The winning bidder will have to provide free broadband service to 50% of the population within the time span of four years, and 95% of the population by the end of its license in respect to a “free service tierâ€. There are no details on when this auction will be taking place, but the matter will be discussed further on the 12th of June.
The unsold 700MHz D block from the recent spectrum is also under speculation, and the FCC has opened asked for the public’s opinion on what to do with the spectrum.
