AOL hasn’t brought much to the table in terms of mobile advancement, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t planning it behind the scenes. Following the free access lead of Verizon and Google, AOL is launching an “Open Mobile Platform” to help developers get their apps compatible with different devices and platforms.

Unlike Google’s Android, AOL isn’t planning on a whole mobile operating system a build which will help mobile developers incorporate their software for multiple OSes. Sort of like mobile building blocks. A phone API for multiple devices. The idea is a cool one and might put AOL back on the map to some degree. The platform will be available this summer for playing around with some new developments. [Press Release]
