Cell Phone service takes to the tracks in Boston
MBTA commuters in Boston have been lucky enough to be guinea pigs for a service by InSite Wireless that allows for mobile devices to operate even while on the train (recently on airplanes as well), traveling through the tunnels. Boston travelers will be able to use their devices even when their train goes underground into some of the cities busiest stations.
AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless have all signed up to use the InSite service, which works by building wireless networks inside the tunnels and underground train stations, and then charging the network providers to use the service. The Downtown Crossing, Government Center, State and Park Street have all been wired for operation, with more planned for the future.
