Femtocell technology is a relatively unheard of service which is currently in development. The new technology plans to offer an enhanced 3G network signal inside of the home, since most mobile calls are made while the user is in their own place of residence. Motorola believes that as much as 30 to 40% of cellular traffic comes from within the home. Femtocell technology would help operators be able to manage the mobile traffic more efficiently, and even offer users a lower “in-home” 3G connection price. A recent study by ABI Research predicts that 40.6 million femtocells will be deployed in home environments by 2011, with an increase of up to $900 million in research and development for the new technology. Motorola plans to roll out a trial of this technology in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, African) mobile markets.
