We could soon get cellphones that run on solar power, judging by the technology recently patented by Motorola which involves a solar cell combined with an LCD display. These solar cells are actually a thin film called transparent conductive oxides that reside on top of the LCD, collecting energy generated by sunlight and passing it on to the battery. Theoretically, this technology enables cellphone to remain charged as long as the LCD is exposed to sunlight. Motorola’s patent information claims that black LCDs with a 75% let-through rate is the optimal setting to work with the technology.
