Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics, and Vodafone have come together to work on establishing the world’s first global, open Linux-based software platform for mobile devices. The reason for this move is to lower development costs and increase flexibility for a more robust mobile environment, with the ultimate aim to create a rich and compelling user experience. The only way to go about this is to establish such a platform that will benefit everyone, from device manufacturers to operators and all software developers. It will also help bridge the digital divide between developed and Third World countries.
